Stone Extension With Vaulted Roof

Cedric Road, Bath

This project in Bath involved the design and delivery of a single-storey stone extension with vaulted roof. The clients were looking to create a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space, requesting a 4-metre-deep extension that would increase internal volume and bring in as much natural light as possible.

With the neighbouring property featuring a 3-metre-deep extension, we developed a solution that angled the return wall of the new extension back toward the boundary. This respected the neighbour’s outlook and eased construction, while also creating an expressive internal geometry. A projecting aluminium window seat was introduced within the angled wall — providing additional kitchen space, a quiet corner to sit, and a beautifully framed view into the garden.

Design and Detailing a stone extension with vaulted roof.

The vaulted roof added volume and character to the extension but brought with it several technical challenges. Its asymmetric form, intersecting with existing structures at multiple angles, required close coordination and precision. We produced additional detail drawings and worked in collaboration with Skeletal Consulting structural engineers to resolve the geometry and ensure the scheme could be delivered smoothly on site.

Alongside the stone extension with vaulted roof, the ground floor of the home was fully reconfigured. A new home office, bathroom, and utility room were added, while the kitchen and dining areas were reorganised to create better flow and functionality for family life. Internal layouts were simplified to support open-plan living while maintaining a sense of separation between spaces when needed.

Daylight and Connectivity

Maximising natural light was a key design driver. Large sliding glass doors open onto the rear garden, while strategically placed Velux rooflights flood the vaulted ceiling with daylight. Internally, glass sliding doors between the kitchen-dining area and the existing lounge allow long views through the house and ensure shared light throughout. Sectional drawings were developed during the planning phase to confirm that neighbouring first-floor windows would not overlook the extension’s interior.

The stone extension was built using timber frame construction for the walls, roof, and ceilings — a sustainable choice that kept the build lightweight and efficient. Rooflights were specified with integrated blinds to reduce solar gain in summer, improving thermal comfort year-round. Every detail — from the window seat to the hidden roof structure — was designed with function and finesse in mind.
